You can sign up for it here: www.uuwf.org Contact us: [email protected] UUWF Calls for Careful Scrutiny of the Nomination to Supreme Court Based on what is known already about nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh, and the desire of the President to install a conservative majority in the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS), the confirmation hearing on the second Trump administration pick for the Supreme Court may likely negatively impact the right to safe and legal abortion nationwide, and access to other reproductive health services for years to come. Because of these harrowing possibilities, the UUWF has signed on to two letters calling for careful scrutiny of, and pointed questions to, Judge Kavanaugh in the course of Senate deliberations on his nomination to the SCOTUS. One letter is focused on separation of church and government and the other, more specifically, on threats to reproductive choice, including access to abortion. We join other interfaith and secular organizations in being deeply troubled by Judge Kavanaugh’s record of statements and decisions on issues related to reproductive health and the right to make private decisions without impediment or imposition. We fear that Judge Kavanaugh, if confirmed, may not uphold the right of a woman to make the best choice for her circumstance— including the choice to seek an abortion by her own conscience, in consultation with her doctor, faith, and values. The Unitarian Universalist Women’s Federation is a national membership organization advancing justice for women. Since our founding in 1963, we have supported access to comprehensive women’s healthcare and the right to safe and legal abortion and contraceptive services. Dear Ones, Michael “Little Feather” Giron is the first Indigenous Water Protector who was arrested in relation to the DAPL pipeline resistance at Standing Rock to be sentenced to a substantial prison term. He is currently incarcerated at USP Hazleton in West Virginia, a maximum-security prison over 1,000 miles from his home. At our UU General Assembly this June, in a nearly unanimous vote, delegates from our congregations adopted an important Action of Immediate Witness. This AIW calls us now to act in solidarity with Water Protector Little Feather. USP Hazleton has been on lockdown since August 6th. Little Feather's family, spiritual community, and even lawyer cannot reach him by phone, email, or visit. Visiting is suspended until further notice with no timeline or reasoning given. As part of the lock down, Little Feather has been denied access to his Indigenous spiritual practices, including inipi and pipe ceremony. Please be direct and unflinching in regards to Little Feather needing contact with his attorney, loved ones, and ceremony, but do not be confrontational for the sake of his safety. Today, please call, email, and fax to ask that: Little Feather's loved ones be able to contact him by phone, email, and visit. Little Feather's lawyer be able to do a wellness check and contact him by phone immediately. The super duper banner that she has in the works will bear the founding date, 1982). The parade was such fun. Look at those beautiful smiling faces! There were hundreds of banners representing congregations in attendance, and 2,500 UU’s cheering them on.
